What should we call our online work in order to optimally communicate what we are to the widest possible audience?
As creators of serialized online content should we champion the term 'web series' in order to further the medium? Should I name my new pet turtle after a ninja turtle? How can we get more people to watch tv online? At "Home at Last," we have answers to these questions. Well, at least we have opinions. |
Okay, at the bare minimum we have wrong opinions. But that counts for something.
First, let's get the turtle question out of the way. Of course you should name your pet turtle after a ninja turtle. In the turtle naming world, these names are biblical. Give your turtle baby a ninja name, and it will forever carry the power and wisdom of it's totally awesome predeccesors. Just don't name it Michaelangelo. He's kind of a belligerent douchebag.
Now, onto the more pressing issues. As members of the web series community, we absolutely recognize the need for one, uniform term. Right now, it seems that term is web series. And we're all for that.
But at the same time, I think it is important for web series creators to heed this advice: Synonyms are your friend (pal, buddy, bro).
Imagine, if you will, a scenario in which you are describing what exactly it is you're doing all the time.
"Well, I'm creating a web series." A what. "A web series." A what. "A web series."
This can and will go on forever. So, while you should absolutely lead with the term, be ready to back it up. Or, to put it more epically... No, never mind Not epically. The only thing epic about the word epic is the monstrous degree to which it is abused and overused online.
To put it in exaggerated, medieval war-ish terms... Go forth into the night, brandishing a 'web series' sword before all else. But make sure you're wearing armor. And make sure you've also got a bow and a couple of dozen arrows. That way when you get that confused or angry "What the fuck is a web series stop talking to me," stare, you've got something to fire back with.
As you explain the term, try these related terms and buzzy happy explainy phrases:
- You know how you watch TV online? It's kind of like that.
- Internet TV
- TV on the Internet
- Scripted TV online
- NOT viral videos
And, after all this explaining, your doltish friend/relative/priest/angsty cousin does not understand, just tell them to watch tv online for one simple reason...
It makes you taller and less bald.
NOT COMPLETELY HAIRED. Just less bald.
